The head tubes look as if they were fillet brazed , but they weren’t. The head tube and the tapered segments that lead into the the top tube and down tube were actually made from two special forgings that were “electro-forged” welded together down the centerline, then ground smooth, so the seam is not usually visible. There are necked-down parts that fit into the top tube and down tube, like internal lugs. Muller has a very detailed explanation of this process, in his superb article: Inside the Varsity , which is now on this site. Mike Rother has an excellent overview of the fillet-brazed lightweights , also on this site.
Some bike parts have a date code cast or stamped into the piece. This clearly is when the component was made and not when the bike was made, but unless the component or bike manufacturer had lots of stock lying around in inventory, the date should be a fairly good indication of the year of the bike. At least it would be the earliest date that the bike could have been made. Of course, all this assumes the bike has the original component. The most likely components to be original are the stem, handlebars, seatpost, and brakes.
On a vintage bike in excellent condition that apparently had a lonely existence in a garage all of the components likely are original.
Check the last two characters in the date code. If they are “JD,” Schwinn manufactured the bike in If they are “JG,” Schwinn manufactured the bike in Classic Stingrays. Locate the bike’s serial number. It will be on the head tube, the A-frame or the seat tube.

Jay Divinagracia The human eye is a remarkable thing. It can pick up on incredibly subtle details, and your brain transforms those signals into snap judgements. In the case of bicycles, the eye can pick out imperfections like a magnet. Rust, scuffed and scratched paint, shoddy or worn out components: I know how to trick the eye.

Above, Punnett Companion, below close-up of the badge. Rochester, NY There were several ways to fashion a bicycle built for two, but the Punnett, with a pair of frames, side-by-side attached to a pair of in-line wheels, was one of the more unlikely ones. The rear axle had a sprocket on either side, each powered by a corresponding chain, front sprocket, and pedals.
If this seemed like difficult cycling and balancing the Punnett with two riders was no easy task there was another option: This was not entirely comfortable, but it was considered practical in getting the machine to and from the abode of the wheelman’s lady friend. It is rumored, that this bicycle belonged to the actor Steve McQueen, however, we have nothing to substantiate that. It is possible, McQueen had a collection of “About motorcyles, over 55 cars, five airplanes, and over ten thousand miscellaneous items.

Serial Numbers For 41 years, from to , the Schwinn Bicycle Company of Chicago offered a unique but little-known line of specially constructed lightweight bicycles: The fillet-brazed chrome-molybdenum models, which were tucked into Schwinn’s model lineup between the lugged Paramount and flash-welded models like the Varsity and Continental. Schwinn’s fillet-brazed CrMo models were beautiful and sweet handling, but in the ‘s bicycle-boom they lost ground to more popular lugged -frame construction, and never recovered.
The story of these unique bicycles is a meaningful branch of Schwinn’s history. They are worth recalling as a unique Schwinn production strategy and a sidebar in the evolution of the bicycle industry. The Fillet-Brazed Difference Until the recent rise of quality TIG-welded and composite bicycle frames, most high quality lightweight bicycles used lugs external metal sleeve fittings to join their frame tubing.

Contact The History of the Folding Bike There have been many who have laid claim to the invention of the folding bike. Humorously, a bike manufacturer who shall remain nameless so as to not unduly embarrass them audaciously claims on their website to have produced the world’s first folding bike in Wishful thinking by their marketing department I suppose.
The truth is that the folding bike has been around for considerably longer than one might imagine and most claims of being the first are erroneous. First things first though, you can’t have a folding bike without the invention of the bicycle itself. So a very short history lesson on the bicycle is in order. Here again we have some disputed claims of invention and historians will probably never be able to identify the exact moment of invention.
For a while some had claimed that Leonardo Da Vinci invented the bicycle based on a sketch found in his Codex Atlanticus. However, this sketch was later determined to be a forgery, though many historical accounts written before this forgery was discovered still credit Da Vinci as the inventor of the bicycle. There were a few “pre-bicycles” invented before the appearance of what one would recognize as a bicycle.
The first of these was probably the “Celerifere” developed by a French count named Mede de Sivrac in

Hartman and Reubens became close friends, often writing and working on material together. Reubens wrote sketches, developed his improvisational skills and, with Hartman, he developed the Pee-wee Herman character. In , The Groundlings staged a performance in which its members created characters one might see in a comedy club. Pee-wee Herman was born that night, his distinctive guttural, “Ha Ha,” followed by a low, “Heh Heh Heh,” laugh became the character’s catch phrase , as did his insult comeback, “I know you are, but what am I?
Pee-wee’s later checkered clothing and persona were largely lifted from manic s children’s TV host Pinky Lee. The inspiration for the name came from a Pee-wee brand miniature harmonica and the surname of an energetic boy Reubens knew from his youth. Sometime in Reubens debuted his character on the television show The Dating Game , appearing three times. During interviews, he has been portrayed as though he is a real life stand-up comedian who expanded his career by playing himself in his films and TV series.
